Obituary for Bernardo J. Cabral, Esq.

NEW BEDFORD-Attorney Bernardo J. Cabral of New Bedford, died Thursday, July 23, 2020 at New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Mary (Andrade) Cabral and his wife, Sandra (Morrow) Cabral. He is survived by his beloved companion, Margarida Correia; his son, Attorney Douglas M. Cabral and his wife, Lisa Vescio-Cabral of Forestdale, MA; his brother, Dr. Guy A. Cabral and his wife, Dr. Francine Marciano-Cabral of Richmond, VA; his sister, Teresa M. Cabral of New Bedford; his companion's 5 grandchildren who he lovingly referred to as his "proxy" grandchildren, Adrian Correia, Julian Correia, Zoe Varnum, Jakob Varnum and Tyler Varnum; his nieces, Beth Di Lullo of Wilton, CT and Allison Bell of Richmond, VA and a nephew, Dr. Wayne Cabral of Rockville, MD as well as many cousins.
Born in Furnas, St. Michael, Azores, he came to the United States at 4 years of age. He attended St. John the Baptist Grammar School, Holy Family High School, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Suffolk University Law School where he received a Juris Doctorate degree cum laude.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War where he served as a military advisor to local Vietnamese Army Forces. His many decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Honor Medal, 1st Class, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Parachute Badge.
Upon discharge from the Army, he worked as a claim adjuster and claim supervisor for the Travelers Insurance Company while attending the Evening Division of Suffolk University Law School. Upon passing the bar, he became an associate of the Law Firm of Desmarais & Carey in New Bedford and then with the Law Firm of Armand Fernandes, Jr. He later formed a partnership with Attorney Russell J. Sobral, now deceased, and the partnerships later expanded with several other attorneys. In 1995, he and his son, Attorney Douglas M. Cabral formed Cabral & Cabral, P.C. until 2006 when he then started a sole law practice. He served as an assistant city solicitor under the administrations of Mayors Brian Lawler, Jack Markey and Frederick Kalisz. He also served on the City of New Bedford Conservation Commission. He was a former member of the Prince Henry Society New Bedford Chapter and was a past president and served on the Board of Directors.
Visiting hours in the funeral home Sunday, July 26, 2020 from 4:00-6:00 P.M. His funeral will be conducted on Monday, July 27, 2020 at 8:45 A.M. from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated in St. Mary Church, 343 Tarkiln Hill Rd., New Bedford at 10:00 A.M. Cremation to follow.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in Attorney Cabral's memory to support cancer research and patient care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284.
Due to current restrictions, face coverings are required along with social distancing and the number of attendees is limited.
