Obituary for Leo R. Veiga

NEW BEDFORD-Leo R. Veiga, 88, of So. Dartmouth, died unexpectedly Thursday, November 29, 2018 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Olive (Mello) Veiga with whom he shared 67 years of marriage and son of the late Francisco R. and Mary (Avila) Veiga and step-son of the late Julia (Pinho) Veiga.
Leo was born in So. Dartmouth residing most of his life in New Bedford before returning to So. Dartmouth where he was a parishioner of St. Mary Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and attained the rank of Corporal. His decorations include the Army Of Occupation Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He was a member of the American Portuguese War Veterans and Seniors Club.
He was a parishioner of the former St. John The Baptist Church where he was a Eucharistic Minister, CCD instructor and a member of the Couple's Club.
He was employed at St. Luke's Hospital as a printer until his retirement and was a member of the St. Luke's Retiree Club. He was previously employed at Aerovox and was a former president of the Aerovox Club.
Leo volunteered in many capacities throughout the years including Pastoral Care at St. Luke's Hospital, the former Blaire House, Teen Encounter Christ Movement, Director for Tec 14, Faith Prayer Partner in the Bridges to Faith Movement, Scout Master at City Mission and No. Dartmouth Share Program.
He played sports for Peaches Cafe, Port Arthur Cafe and CYO church leagues and managed the Morse Twist Drill Little League and soccer teams. He was a member of the Moose Lodge.
Leo enjoyed playing golf, bowling in the Aerovox and St. Luke's Leagues, getaways to Newport and he was an avid NewYork Yankees fan.
His family includes his wife; several nieces, nephews, godchildren and wonderful friends. He was the brother of the late Antone Veiga.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association or American Cancer Society.
Visiting hours in the funeral home Sunday, December 9, 2018 from 2:00-4:00 P.M. His funeral will be conducted Monday, December 10, 2018 at 8:45 A.M. in the funeral home with a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated in St. Mary Church, So. Dartmouth at 10:00 A.M. Interment in St. John Cemetery.
