Obituary for Margarida Cosme Xavier

NEW BEDFORD-Margarida (Cosme) Xavier, 91, of New Bedford, died Sunday, June 9, 2019 at St. Luke's Hospital surrounded by her loving family following a lengthy period of declining health. She was the widow of Gil Xavier, Sr. and daughter of the late Jose de Medeiros Cosme and Joana (Rodrigues) Cosme.
Born in Povoacao, St. Michael, Azores, she immigrated to New Bedford in 1960 and proudly became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1980.
A devout Catholic, Mrs. Xavier was a parishioner of Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Church and was devoted to the Holy Ghost.
Mrs. Xavier was employed as a housekeeper for Dr. John S. Wolkowicz and his family for 32 years.
In her leisure time, she loved sewing and cooking and will be long remembered for her delicious rum cakes. She had a special love for babies and they always brought a smile to her face.
Her family includes her sons, Gil C. Xavier, Jr. and John C. Xavier, both of New Bedford and the late Joseph C. Xavier; her daughter-in-law, Lori Xavier of Dartmouth; 2 granddaughters, Victoria Lynn Ramos -Perez of New York and Andrea Marie Xavier of New Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Manuel Cosme, Gil de Medeiros Cosme, Jose de Medeiros Cosme, Elvira de Medeiros Cosme, Sofia de Medeiros Cosme, Cecelia Cosme and Maria C. Cardoza.
Visiting hours in the funeral home Friday, June 14, 2019 from 4:00-8:00 P.M. Her funeral will be conducted Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 7:30 A.M. from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated in Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Church at 8:30 A.M. Interment in St. John Cemetery.
