Obituary for Mary S. Barros

NEW BEDFORD- Former New Bedford City Councilor and Community Activist Mary Santos Barros, 94, died at her home on Monday, November 12, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of Jeronimo R. Barros with whom she shared 58 years of marriage and daughter of the late Joseph Santos, Sr. and Julia (Cardoza) Santos.
Born in New Bedford, Mary was an active and devoted parishioner of Our Lady Of The Assumption Church.
She attended the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and was employed as a social worker for the Department of Social Services until her retirement and previously was employed at Aerovox.
A dedicated community activist, she was a member of various organizations, clubs and committees including Director of On Board, Massachusetts State Board Of Education (5 year term), Community Fellowship Program at M.I.T., Lions Club, Cape Verdean Women's Social Club, Cape Verdean Veterans Women's Auxilliary, NAACP and Committee of Concerned Parents for New Bedford Schools (Executive Committee member) which culminated in the construction of the Alfred J. Gomes School.
She served two terms as City Councilor of Ward 4 and was also a State Committee Representative to the Democratic State Party Convention.
In recognition of her tireless advocacy for education and involvement in the Cape Verdean community, the Mary S. Barros Educational Center was named for her and she was inducted into the Cape Verdean Hall of Fame.
Her family includes her husband; her children, Julie Santos, Naia Barros, Nuno Barros and his wife, Maria, Joseph Barros and his wife, Raquel and Sal Silva, all of New Bedford, John Barros of Waterbury, CT, Kwame Samory of Dallas, TX and the late Vincent Santos; 1 sister, Anna “Minnie” Senna of New Bedford; cousin, Mary Semedo of Bridgeport, CT; 18 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Julio Santos and Joseph Santos, Jr.
Visiting hours in the funeral home on Friday, from 4:00-8:00 P.M. Her funeral will be Saturday 7:45 A.M. at the funeral home with a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated in Our Lady Of The Assumption Church at 9:00A.M. Interment in St. Mary Cemetery.
