Obituary for Michael A. Taylor, M.D.

NEW BEDFORD-Michael A. Taylor, M.D., 68, of New Bedford, passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at St. Luke's Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was the beloved husband of Deborah (Pina) Taylor and son of the late Percy E. Taylor and Yvonne (Hendrickson) Anderson and step-son of Samuel Anderson.
Michael was born and raised in Rochester, New York. He was the oldest of 10 children. He attended West High School in Rochester where he participated in many activities, including the explorers drill team, baseball, swimming and diving teams. He graduated as class valedictorian. He completed his undergraduate education at Harvard in 1973 and his medical training at Tufts University in 1977. He was an Intern in Pathology at Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton, MA from 1977-1978, completed a postgraduate residency in surgery at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MA in 1982, and served as a Medical Resident in Internal Medicine at Franklin Square Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland from 1984 to 1987. Dr. Taylor also worked in New Mexico and Athens, Georgia where he completed his public health service. He practiced Internal Medicine in New Bedford for many years.
Dr. Taylor was an attentive, compassionate and caring physician who genuinely cared about his patients and their well being. He listened without judgment and did his best to alleviate the suffering of others. He believed in people and focused on their best qualities.
Michael was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was an avid reader, enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling with his wife and playing golf in his leisure time. As a member of a large family, he always made time to lend an ear, offer advice, or just be the wise older brother. He will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 29 years, Deborah P. Taylor of New Bedford; his son, Tate A. Taylor of Wareham; his step-daughter, Kelly L. Pina of New Bedford and his late step-son Aaron J. Brito; 3 grandchildren, Jayliana Brito, Ava DeBarros and Dominik Rubio; 3 brothers, Joseph Taylor, Philip Taylor of Germantown, Maryland and Steven Taylor (Judith) of Silver Spring, Maryland; 2 sisters, Elayne Taylor of Manchester-By-The-Sea, Massachusetts and Noelle Taylor Jalbert (David) of Peabody, Massachusetts; his aunt, Nadine Hendrickson and uncle, Barry Hendrickson of New York, many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and life long friends. He was the brother of the late Clinton Taylor, Darryl Taylor, Eric Taylor and William E. “Billy” Taylor.
A Celebration of Life Funeral Mass will be conducted on Monday, May 13th, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. in Grace Episcopal Church, 133 School Street, New Bedford, MA 02740.
